THE COMPLICATED AND RAW BEAUTY OF THE MEN OF SECRET THAI HARBOR.
It might just be the fact that this place exists in such complex symbiosis with nature and tourism, it might be that many of these men are part of a local mafia ring, it might be just the sun, daily labor and salt of the Earth on their bodies, the many tattoos made by a local artist who lives on the beach, or that aura of a certain freedoms that exudes from their faces, but I couldn’t help but get drawn into their world over and over again over the short span of time spent in the Koh Panghan island.
“The way they work together, the colors they choose for their boats, how they ride the waves, how they smoke their afternoon joins- I wanted to capture it all.”
Garbage disposal is simple here- everything that doesn’t get used or eaten is burned! So labor like shoveling burning waste is part of life and so is the smell that comes with it. It covers the island usually in the early morning, but can easily linger through the afternoon. Which of course doesn’t really bother those tourists who make it this far on the island.
Even though the life here happens mostly with doors wide open, I tried not to intrude too much into the personal space of my objects, however, this was too hard to resist.
